HughesNet earns the title of the worst ISP with its agonizingly slow speeds, a data cap that vanishes in the blink of an eye, rendering it a deceptive promise. Rain transforms your connection into an intermittent ghost, leaving you without internet for an entire hour. Add to this the routine router resets due to unpredictable connectivity woes, and you've got a service that consistently disappoints. Tip for consumers:Its the worst internet in the world, they have a huge cancellation fee for a reason, they knew they would loose al their customers if they’re cancellation fee wasn’t that much. The company is pretty bad and their internet connection is not any better. After random fees, we end up paying $200 for internet advertised at $105. We supposedly pay $200 for 25+ MB/s speeds. I commonly get less than a mb of download on a very regular basis. The other day very late at night, I had a peak of 50 KB per second. Not Megabytes, KILOBYTES. WE pay $200 for that. I have also seen people complaining that HughesNet will cull your bandwith and remaining data when the wifi isn't being used. Evil company Date of experience: March 8, 2024
The customer service representative wanted to read a sales pitch when I called to cancel. I explained that I was at lunch from work and just wanted to cancel my service. She hung up on me after I had to wait almost 30 minutes before talking to her and being passed around to different representatives. I would not ever recommend this company to anyone and I would go without the internet before using them ever again. Date of experience: October 25, 2023
I have had the service for these thank two days and it is not at all what I was told or promised. Worst when I went to cancel for 30 day no risk I was told that I would have to pay a $400 cancellation fee! Stay away from Hughes. Service Value Returns Quality Date of experience: September 28, 2023
Hughsnet has the slowest internet service, it is expensive and the customer service is deplorable. November 2,2023 at approximately 2:00 pm for any supervisor that cares can listen in to our conversation. My Opinion Service Value Quality Date of experience: November 2, 2023
We had hughesnet for 6 years because we live in a very rural area and had no other choice. We call to cancel and that went ok so they send us a box to send their equipment back.We did that via UPS like it said.Got a bill from them for over $300 charging us for equipment we already sent back. Please avoid them at all cost.We now have starlink and it's wonderful. This "Internet" service is akin to 56K dial up WiFi from the 90s. And by all means, do not try and contact customer service because you'll be waiting for over an hour consistently to simply get hung up on when someone does answer the phone. Further, they will not allow you to cancel due to their $600 cancellation fee. The only services that require a contract these days are predatory services that are well aware their services are subpar. I would rate this a 0 but that is impossible on the site. DO NOT USE THIS INTERNET! You have been warned! They should be fined and shut down for false advertising. This is horrible internet. I have issues from the beginning and it has never gotten any better. I get a few hours a month of so-so service and then it's gone. It slows down to the point of being utterly unusable. They blamed it on my computers and smart TV's and PlayStation! NO $#*! that's why I have Internet! SMDH ridiculous! Tip for consumers:They charge a whopping $385 to cancel but it is worth it not to pay for no internet at all! I've called and asked Hughesnet to stop mailing me so they canned my name to resident. No I want all my info deleted STOP mailing me and I called 6/25/2024 to ask to stop mailing me and remove my info but every time they asked why I said I have Starlink and will never use them again they would hang up on me. Like really making me calling over and over just asking to stop sending me mailings offers or anything. So I wrote a complaint on BBB and they tried calling me but it's an automated service so they haven't stop or confirmed they would oblige my request. My info was all there you don't need me JUST STOP MAILING ME CALLING ME OR HARASSING ME! How are you still in business your service is slow and not worth half the money. Your customer service sucks horribly you're not a company I'll ever do business with again. Tip for consumers:Hughesnet sucks how are they still in business. Starlink should put them out STOP mailing me that is my request. Products used:Horrible internet service Service Value Shipping Returns Quality Date of experience: July 4, 2024
Very poor internet slow speeds and throttling your speed down at night. Hidden termination fees that even if you transfer your account from one state to another they set you up on a two year contract claiming early termination is 250.00 dollars. Monthly 90 dollars for bel I w standard or even advertised speeds. Very bad business would never recommend hughesnet to anyone. Service quit working right after the installation service guy left. Asked for repair, never returned my call. Cancelled my service the next day. By then Hughes Net had piled on almost $900 in charges, then added a late cancellation fee. I put it in dispute with my credit card company and they agreed. The Hughes Net disputed my claim, and I had to document all my actions, emails, phone calls, website services. Finally I got a full refund after a 3-month struggle. I filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission, and that got their attention. Then for the next 2 years I keep getting a monthly bill for a late cancellation fee, $400, even though I cancelled within the 3-day window. Took me two hours on the phone to finally get that billing cancelled. As far as I'm concerned, the outfit should be put out of business. Their billing department is almost impossible to find, so here is the phone number: *******270. All other numbers listed are sales #s. More often than not I can't get an internet connection. When I do it cuts out. No one can hear me when I make a phone call. Zoom is impossible. Totally worthless internet. I'm better off using data! And it costs almost $100 a month. Do not use this service. Try getting a Hotspot through your phone provide. Works 100% better. Tip for consumers:Do not use this service Service Value Shipping Returns Quality Date of experience: July 24, 2022
Once you enter into a contract, they'll do anything in their power to strong-arm you into not leaving. They will flat out lie to you. I would avoid this company at all cost. I switched over to T-Mobile for $50 a month and have a far better service. Hughesnet was charging me $121 a month for Internet that barely worked. Date of experience: May 3, 2023
I cancelled my service in November and unplugged the system. It was unpowered and DISCONNECTED! IN December I received an alert that I only had 3% of data left and I should purchase tokens. Total scam. Makes me question how many times they did that to me and other people over the years. Products used:Internet Service Value Shipping Returns Quality Date of experience: February 24, 2024
They lied about no contract, they rip you off and there internet doesn't work and too many issues from the beginning. I was very disappointed. Tip for consumers:False no contracts and bad internet and way too many problems with internet since the beginning Products used:Internet service but was suppose to be no contract. If I could give zero stars I would. I went with Hugh's net cause it was the only internet company to service my area. We had it for less than 2 months. Service was horrible spent more time buffering than anything could watch tv for a solid 2 minutes and would buffer again. Was not informed about a contract when first signed up nor a fee for not returning equipment. When I called to cancel still did not tell me about being charged for cancellation and the lady I spoke with wanted to argue with me about canceling my service. Today I checked my bank and they had pulled out money when service had already been canceled months ago and had been pulling out money and refusing to refund since the cancellation. When I called they refused to refund my money and said it was a valid charge for me canceling. Be careful going through Hughs net Date of experience: November 11, 2023
TWO YEAR CONTRACT. Speeds not as paid for, service is off when there is a storm system between Florida and Arizona ( this is literally what I was told!). When guests come over for holidays or any weekend night plus Friday, the service buffers awfully and you literally cannot watch anything. It is very embarrassing. Extremely expensive for what you ACTUALLY get. Tech support is of no help at all, they can't make it work any better because of the limitations of the entire Hughes set up. If you talk to the offshore customer service crew, they can't suggest anything but upgrading your plan to get better service. I have read the reviews of the people who got tricked into that, same problems for a lot more money. Please read reviews and save yourself the hassle. Two years is a VERY long time to put up with this lack of quality. Better Business Bureau receives so many complaints they say they only publish 1 out of 20, check that out. Stay Away. Beware of this company. They charge money for your breathing and never fix your problem until you have to cancel. Cancellation fee before 39 days of agreement is 400 dollars. Please avoid this frustrating internet no service, problems since day 1, upgrades are not worth it. Service Value Shipping Returns Quality Date of experience: July 7, 2023
Worst. Customer service is rude and won't help. I cannot load a single google map. Service turned over yesterday so I have full data but they lie about the data. Been loading this map page 10 minutes and it's blurry imagery. It's for work. I upgraded to their terrible business plan and of course it doesn't work any better than before- it's worse. Cant check email. Definitely cannot shop online. You definitely cannot stream or watch YouTube bc you'd use your entire data in a day. I probably just used 1/2 my data trying to load google maps though it never loaded. Hughes is a legally protected scam. Due to their lies it's impossible for me to even do my job- I cannot check email! I call every week and do every single they say and it's still useless expensive garbage. This is the worst internet company you could possibly choose. Horrible customer service, Horrible speeds, high price, can't even watch a 2 minute youtube video on low resolution without interruptions, I was told by every installer this service is over sold and does not work properly due to users above their capacity. I realize you may not have many internet options if you are considering satellite but this company will only make it worse. It also takes over an hour on the phone to resolve the most simple issue. I have never had more disconnected calls with another company. The customer service reps will just hang up on you and make you start all over very often. Lazy, unprofessional, don't provide what they offer, etc. Don't be a sucker! Tip for consumers:What for another internet provider, look into a cell phone booster and cell phone tower internet or move before you consider this company to rely on any internet service at all. When I ordered hughesnet, the rep made it sound great. There has not been 1 day in a year that I've been able to watch anything without 100+ interruptions. My internet and all when I check my connection is working, so what is the problem. And don't think about getting an email or chat from them. Also they take their payment from my account and charge me a late fee every month, y the late fee, you pull the money out... never have I gotten receipt of service, a SAN number, anything... want to quit service but not sure if theres an early disconnect fee... they should pay it for horrible service Date of experience: September 13, 2020
Tried to cancel Hughesnet after several years of slow, sometimes no service but it was the only game in town for a while. They came out several times, cut a few leaves from a tree and nothing improved. Spent hours trying to cancel and two weeks later, no box to return the equipment. Called when I got a text saying my payment didn't go through…not trusting them I told my credit card not to send another payment. So now I'm told the first cancellation never went through. On top of it all, if I don't find a way to climb the pole to get something off the dish, it will cost me $100 to have them do it. Rant over. Date of experience: August 28, 2022
I have found the customer service very helpful. In this day and age of technology, businesses have to continually work to upgrade and stay current. Hughesnet internet equipment is in part obsolete. Smart tv's do not have ethernet capability... yet, Hughesnet system provides ethernet cables to enhance their product. They are useless if you own a smart tv. This and the fact that only a slow 25 mps/10G is offered at the same price as cable high speed internet unlimited at 200 mps which makes Hughesnet very expensive. However, Hughesnet is more for rural locations that cable does not reach and because of this fact I think Hughesnet charges more. Understanding the basics before you enlist this service goes a long way in customer satisfaction. Going in with a good attitude, being agreeable and willing to work with customer service makes it a much nicer experience. Date of experience: December 2, 2020
Satellite internet is much faster than dialup but... you need to weigh out your options when choosing this. This is very expensive if you do not need the speed. The service was good but expensive. The major problems is no service during storms and snow. This would not be a good option if you live in a VERY snowy area. If you do not need the extra speed stick with dialup it is cheaper and more reliable. Date of experience: May 12, 2012
Great service for areas where dialup is your only option. I switched from Peoplepc and am thrilled. I have had the service for almost a year now. Read the details on the website. You are NOT getting high speed all you can eat type internet service. You have download and upload limits that are imposed by the government. Be sure you understand what you are getting before you sign up. Hughes net is NOT for gamers. There is lag time on satellite service that makes it impossible to play real time games. By the time your computer has caught up with the last persons move its too late for you to react. Don't even try it! You will be unhappy. Hughesnet is also NOT for people who do a lot of video watching online, Downloads of movies etc. You just DON'T have the usage for it. Again, you are not going to be happy. What Hughesnet IS good for is general browsing, checking your email, research, school work, forums, sending photos etc to family. It works great on sites like Ancestry.com where you need to look at scanned documents. So much faster than dialup. Know what you are getting before you buy so you will not be unhappy. The website give you ALL the information you need to make your decision. They want you happy too! If you are stuck on dialup give them a chance. The website offers a lot of different options. You get email addresses with your service. The only thing I consistently use on the website is checking where I am at on my usage. There are very helpful tools to do so and also a download for a usage meter on your desktop. Date of experience: August 30, 2011
