2nd order within 2 weeks to be lost in transit. Original order lost so they credited my account but didn't refund all of purchase price. Replacement didn't work out so I returned, again loosing out on return $. Now 2nd order is lost and they're telling me that I need to wait 1 more day and call them back. This is not good. My 2nd order (same as original) has been sitting in some hub for 5-6 days and shows it is delayed, same as before. I'm done with Steep & Cheap and Back Country. Back Country looses because they are a parent/partner? Company. Very Disappointed.

After comparing prices for a specific pillow, I found Steep & Cheap to be 2/3 less in price. $24.00 elsewhere. 8.00 with them. Cheaper than Amazon and received just as fast. I was skeptical but decided to pull the trigger. Four days later my order was on my doorstep.
100% New product. Not seconds or grey goods

Date of experience: February 16, 2023Watch your credit card statement immediately after a purchase. They bill for several cents more than what they tell you on your bill. I caught them and they said they HAD to do it that way to prevent fraud. Seriously. They finally did straighten out the credit card charge. I only noticed because my new credit card company, Capital One, immediately texts me when a vendor charges my card. Otherwise I probably would not have noticed. And would they have corrected it if I had not? I dunno, but I have NEVER experienced this with ANY other vendor, online or brick/mortar. Sounds VERY odd. It will be my last purchase from Steep & Cheap.

"Our system does authorize a bit over the billable total, typically 4-5 cents prior to shipping, however, you should see reflected on your statement the final billing of $91.17 being settled off of our first authorization of $91.21. I can assure you this is not a scheme, but our system's way of authorizing your card and preventing fraudulent transactions. "

I requested a replacement plastic part over a dozen times and they have not responded to me in any case at any time. I would never buy anything from them again and will be disputing my Credit Card charge tomorrow.

Date of experience: June 13, 2022Read the reviews and save yourself the hassle of trying to return an item you didn't order, or never receiving your order at all and having to fight for a refund for a month and a half like I did. Trust me, it's not worth the $10-$20 you may save ordering from this company. Order from a reputable online retailer so if something goes wrong you will actually get what you paid for and will have saved the stress this "retailer" has caused.

Date of experience: December 2, 2022I was a little hesitate to buy a comparatively chapter pair of shoes from Steep and Cheap considering the other reviews. I made the order on Friday. Not only did customer service answer phone right away on Saturday to answer a question about the order, but they also shipped my item the following day on Sunday. I received item within 5 days (Utah to Oregon) even though expected delivery was 8 days later. I highly recommend Steep and Cheap to others and encourage them to ignore the hype.
Tip for consumers:Take advantage of the lower prices and don't be intimidated by negative reviews.

Date of experience: September 28, 2022This company showed up on my credit card as a $310 charge for 2 shirts I never ordered. When I called to check on that false order they said "Oh looks like that order was cancelled due to inaccurate billing information" I said BUT you charged my card anyway! "oh, not sure why we did that"- they then asked me to hold for 23 minutes, and the result was "Oh I can't figure it out, I have to check with someone in the morning! I had to cancel my credit card right before Christmas and report fraudulent activity because this company can't follow general business practices - "if wrong billing information is provided don't process the order!"
Date of experience: December 4, 2023I bought my sleep number bed about 3 years ago. From day one it has been a nightmare. After 1 month one side stated deflating. They came out and said they'd fixed it. No they just made it work for 4 days. I called them back and they told me I couldn't return my bed because I had a " warranty claim ". Since then I have made multiple attempts to get this piece of crap fixed but they conventionally loose there signal or hang up on me. When I say multiple, I have tried over 100 times. Great company here! Good luck! I spent $7000! That's a great company! They should be on the Forbes 500! I'm sure I'm the only one!

But when I reached out to them they responded very quickly and I still received them in a timely manner. Would definitely shop with them again
Date of experience: April 5, 2023I am a verified, first time buyer and had ordered some items online based on their listed item price. At the time of the payment process, they bait and switched ALL their listed prices to a higher cost. A legit business would never do this. BEWARE!
I've contacted Steep&Cheap and am awaiting their reply, if they ever do reply. I've also contacted my payment center of this transaction.

Date of experience: March 20, 2023Ordered a pair of boots that I needed for work with overnight shipping before noon MST (according to their shipping policy, noon is the latest to order something and have it shipped out the same day for overnight / next day shipping). I talked to two separate customer service agents who both confirmed that my order would be shipped out the same day. Four days later, I had to drive to the local FedEx and pick up my boots because they still hadn't been delivered. The customer service here is a joke as well as the actual service

Date of experience: October 31, 2023Bought a jacket and returned it, because it wasn't a good fit and it was a cheap material. When I place the order initially they said it will cost $6.99 for a shipping return label. After I returned the jacket I got a refund that was missing $18.91. When I called to ask for an explanation they said it was the $6.99 label cost plus $10.95 shipping cost. They are overcharging people with those returning costs. They made some money on my back but lost a customer.

Date of experience: May 23, 2023I was pretty nervous about ordering from this website because of all the bad reviews. But I went ahead and bit the bullet. I did order through PayPal to try and make it easier to get a refund if I had to but this was a non-issue.
My order came very quickly, in 2 days, and was in perfect condition. I got jackets that cost $300 on North face for $135, so I'm glad I was patient and waited for the end of season sale. This site is worth it.

Date of experience: September 26, 2019Try putting something in your cart on Steep & Cheap and let it sit there for a few weeks to watch the prices fluctuate depending on the particular sale. I did this with two items while I debated whether to splurge or not and I was shocked how the prices went up when the company offered a sale (say $40 off a $200 purchase) and back down again when the sale expired. If you read this review and others here, I think the theme will become clear. This is a company with shady practices. For some, the deal might be worth it; for me, I'd rather support a company that has the same kind of values I try to uphold in the backcountry.
Tip for consumers:Don't bother to wait for a sale. The inflated prices erase any savings.
Date of experience: November 9, 2021There have been changes and yes times items I was slightly confused about. This is an auction site, with gear from previous years. Yes I've had snags in socks, or ordered too small or big. That's on me for not getting a measurement. Steep n cheep has been with me all over the world and I got to sat I know I can always find a deal. I keep my expectations real and the products are legitimate so I find this company and it's other affiliates affordable and convenient.
Date of experience: November 11, 2021Ordered a jacket and based on the website "Orders placed before 5PM, MST ship the same day. Ordered before 5PM MST and my order did not ship the same day. Waited until the end of the next day and called, was told "you picked economy shipping, so we have 5-10 days to get your item to you" So I asked about the websites shipping info and was told "That is only for people who pay for priority or overnight shipping"
Based on what I read, it would seem normal to think all orders ship the same day and the only difference would be the time it takes to reach you. Apparently SteepandCheap.com does not feel that is the case and they will sit on your order for days before shipping.
The extra week to get my item doesn't matter. Just wish they were clear on their website.

(1) I paid a few dollars extra for faster shipping and it did not arrive on time (2) when I wrote to ask about this, the reply was unrelated and unhelpful and I received no further help (3) you can't make a return by using an order number, they make you log in, but you have to call if you need to reset your password. Ancient practice.

I paid for shipping and the item is now 15 days out with no sign on tracking of when I am going to get it. I sent 2 emails with no response. I then called. I was basically told that "thats the thing with the steep and cheap" - its old products and you are getting a discount. No help, no consideration on my price for shipping - nothing. Never buying from either site again.
Date of experience: June 12, 2020Steep and Cheap buys defective products from manufacturers at deeply discounted prices, then they sell them to you. When you buy them and subsequently return them they charge you for shipping which increases their volume with UPS thereby getting them a discount on shipping for all of their sites (. E.g. backcountry.com). The private equity guys that bought backcountry do not care about the long term or the steep&cheap customer. They do care about the backcountry customers. They are trying to lower thier overall shipping costs to sell the company to some other fool. You and I are part of the greater fool theory. No More.

To return the product cost the price of shipping the 1.2 pound product ($7.28) plus an additional $6.99 for me to print the return label. $14.27 total. Having haggled this for over a week, I have given up and will no longer do business with this company. Steep doesn't begin to describe it...
Date of experience: January 14, 2018I have worn lots of icebreaker body fit 200. I am tall slim hike a lot, the large fits perfect. Never had a fitting issue until steep and cheap. Not sure if they were knock off or made in a different place than normal but I had purchased 3 long sleeve body fit shirts. Two the same and one. None of them fit like a normal icebreaker shirt, tried to wear them couldn't so I gave them away, didn't bother dealing with returns, honestly was choked so I just wont use the site again.

No whefe on the label, web sight or directions for a return does it indicate the return is 6.99. Bottom line, paid 34.50, shipping total to get here with top price is 43.48. Return credit is 27.51. Why order online if the risk is 16.97 cost to receive and return! Called customer service, Mason said if I had placed the prefer directly on the phone, I could have received a free return label. Wow, ordering on phone is cheaper than online. Lol won't order again or even shop

They overcharged me for hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise that I did NOT order! And now - one month later - they've just charged me for all of those items AGAIN!
Currently, they are holding my money ransom, and I've had to file a dispute with the bank. We'll see how this all pans out.
Date of experience: January 30, 2014Be very careful of this company I received an email from them saying their warehouse has receive my return and that the money would be on my card. A few months later I go back to check to make sure it went through and sure enough it did not. I contacted them and they said they did oh me $26 no they only the entire amount 78. This place is straight up scamming people they did reluctantly return my money but it's scary to think that the company will tell you they refunded your money and not actually do it.
